Safaris in Southern Africa with Neil Taylor

Small-Group Camping Tours in Botswana Offer a Holistic Experience of Wilderness and Wildlife

Botswana is one of the prime areas in Africa for those seeking wilderness and its teeming wildlife. Nowhere else in Africa can you enjoy such pristine beauty and spectacular wildlife in a perfectly safe setting.

I offer 3-5 week eco-tours in the vast unspoilt wildernesses and game reserves of Botswana: the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, the Makgadikgadi Pans, Nxai Pan National Park, the Okavango River and Delta, Moremi, the Savuti Desert and Chobe National Park. Here you can have countless memorable encounters with the region’s mammals and some of the most varied birdlife in the world.

My tours are small-group – a maximum of four guests – and offer an opportunity for an in-depth and intimate experience of the region’s hauntingly beautiful landscapes, and their birds, mammals, trees and general ecology.

In contrast to most safari tours, which concentrate on the seemingly inevitable checklists of mammals and birds which have to be seen, I have an alternative vision for my wilderness tours. I aim for a holistic experience in which we both see and marvel at the wonderful variety and abundance of birds and mammals, but also allow ourselves to escape from the pressures of modern life and explore stillness and simply being in these special places, allowing them to offer us healing of mind and spirit.

A significant part of each tour is spent in the Kalahari Desert, which in its ancient and pristine vastness offers the possibility of solitude, retreat and renewal, and spiritual experiences.

We travel in our own fully-equipped 4WD, and will be camping at a basic level without the unnecessary and luxury equipment which would isolate us from the environment.

My tours are deliberately slow-paced. We do not rush from site to site, nor do we roar around in search of specific species. Instead we concentrate on getting to know each place and its flora and fauna more deeply. The schedules and purpose of my alternative tours allow us to sink into the timeless rhythms and energy of the whole landscape, of which the wildlife is only a part.
